Nazir Ahmad Mob Lynching Case - M. P.
An Additional District and Sessions Court in Madhya Pradesh sentenced 14 men to life imprisonment for the 2022 mob lynching of Nazir Ahmad.
Case Background
The incident took place in the early hours of August 3, 2022, near Barakhad village in the Seoni Malwa area of Narmadapuram district, Madhya Pradesh.
The Victims: Nazir Ahmad, a 50-year-old resident of Amravati, Maharashtra, was travelling in a truck along with Shaikh Lala and Sayed Mushtaq. They were transporting 28 cattle from Nanderwada village.
The Assault: A group of self-styled cow vigilantes armed with sticks, lathis, and iron rods intercepted the truck. Suspecting illegal cattle smuggling, the mob dragged the occupants out and brutally assaulted them.
Outcome: Nazir Ahmad sustained severe injuries and later passed away during treatment at a hospital. The other two passengers survived the attack with serious injuries.
The Court Verdict
The judgment was delivered by First Additional Sessions Judge Tabassum Khan.
Charges and Convictions: The court convicted all 14 accused of offences including murder, attempt to murder, rioting, and forming an unlawful assembly armed with deadly weapons under the Indian Penal Code.
The Ruling: The court recorded that the prosecution successfully proved the accused committed "mob lynching" with "extreme brutality". While the assault was exceptionally violent, the court declined to award the death penalty, noting that capital punishment is reserved for the "rarest of rare cases" and the convicts lacked a previous criminal history.
Evidence: Even though several key prosecution witnesses turned hostile during the trial, the court based its conviction on identification parade records, medical reports, initial witness statements, and video footage recorded during the assault.
Compensation: The court recommended financial compensation for Nazir Ahmad’s wife, children, and parents, alongside medical and financial assistance for the two injured survivors.
Aftermath
Immediately following the verdict, emotional and tense scenes unfolded outside the court premises. Relatives of the convicted men protested the life sentences, with some attempting to block the police vehicle and lying down in front of it to prevent the convicts from being moved to prison. Local police eventually brought the situation under control to transfer the individuals to jail.
