Aarushi Talwar Murder Case
The Aarushi Talwar Murde Case, also known as the 2008 Noida Double Murder Case, remains one of India’s most sensational and controversial unsolved mysteries.
The Incident
On the morning of May 16, 2008, 13-year-old Aarushi Talwar was found dead in her bedroom in Noida with her throat slit and head bludgeoned. Initially, the family’s missing domestic help, Hemraj Banjade, was the prime suspect. However, his body was discovered on the terrace of the same building the next day, killed in a similar manner.
Key Investigative Developments
Initial Investigation: The Noida Police were heavily criticised for a botched investigation, including failing to secure the crime scene and allowing it to be contaminated.
The "Honour Killing" Theory: Police initially alleged that Aarushi’s parents, Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, killed her and Hemraj after finding them in an "objectionable" position.
CBI Takeover: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the case in June 2008. Two different CBI teams reached conflicting conclusions:
One team suspected other domestic helps (Krishna, Rajkumar, and Vijay).
A second team focused back on the parents, eventually filing a "closure report" due to lack of evidence, which the court rejected.
Legal Timeline & Verdicts
2013 Conviction: A special CBI court found the Talwars guilty of murder and sentenced them to life imprisonment based on circumstantial evidence.
2017 Acquittal: The Allahabad High Court overturned the conviction, stating the CBI failed to prove guilt beyond reasonable doubt and had relied on "insufficient" evidence.
Current Status: As of March 2026, the case remains technically unsolved. While the Talwars were released in 2017, the Supreme Court of India admitted appeals from the CBI and Hemraj's wife challenging the acquittal.
