Murder of Chandranath Rath

Chandranath Rath, the personal assistant (PA) to BJP leader and West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead on the night of Wednesday, May 6, 2026. The incident occurred in the Madhyamgram area of North 24 Parganas District.

Key Details of the IncidentMethod of Attack: Rath was traveling in a car when he was ambushed by unidentified assailants. Eyewitnesses reported that bike-borne gunmen intercepted the vehicle and opened fire at point-blank range.

Injuries: He suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his head, chest, and abdomen. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Investigation: Suvendu Adhikari has termed the killing a "pre-planned murder" and a "cold-blooded" act, alleging that the attackers had conducted a "recce" for two to three days prior to the hit.

Political Context: The murder took place just two days after the West Bengal assembly election results. The BJP has blamed the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) for the violence, while the TMC has condemned the incident and called for a court-monitored CBI probe.

Current StatusLaw Enforcement: West Bengal DGP Siddh Nath Gupta has assured a thorough investigation. Police have reportedly seized a four-wheeler used in the crime and detained several suspects.

Victim Background: Rath was a former Indian Air Force personnel and a long-time associate of Adhikari, handling his political coordination.The incident has triggered fresh political tensions and protests across the region

    15-year-old boy has been detained in  Gujarat for the murder of his elder brother and his pregnant sister-in-law at their home in the  Khodiyar Ashram  in Shobhavadala village, Junagadh district in Gujarat.
