Nick Leeson Case

Nick Leeson (born February 25, 1967) is an English former derivatives trader known as the original "Rogue Trader". He is infamous for causing the 1995 collapse of Barings Bank, the UK's oldest merchant bank, after racking up approximately $1.4 billion (£827 million) in hidden trading losses.

The Barings Bank Collapse (1995)

Unauthorized Trading: While managing Barings' operations in Singapore, Leeson began making speculative, unauthorized trades.
The "88888" Account: He concealed mounting losses in a secret error account, famously numbered 88888.

Kobe Earthquake: His attempts to recoup losses by betting on a stable Japanese market failed when the 1995 Kobe earthquake caused markets to plummet, doubling his losses.

Insolvency: Barings was declared insolvent on February 26, 1995, and was eventually sold to ING for just £1

Arrest and Imprisonment
Capture: Leeson fled Singapore but was arrested in Frankfurt, Germany, and extradited.

Sentence: He was sentenced to six and a half years in Singapore's Changi Prison in 1995 but was released in 1999 for good behavior after being diagnosed with colon cancer
