Sheena Bora Murder Case

The Sheena Bora Murder Case is one of India's most high-profile criminal investigations, involving a complex web of family secrets, financial disputes, and a three-year cover-up.

The Disappearance (2012)
Missing Date: Sheena Bora, a 24-year-old executive at Mumbai Metro One, went missing on April 24, 2012.

The Deception: Her mother, Indrani Mukerjea (then CEO of INX Media), had introduced Sheena to everyone as her younger sister. After Sheena disappeared, Indrani told friends and family—including Sheena’s fiancé and step-brother Rahul Mukerjea—that Sheena had moved to the United States for studies.

No Report: No missing person's complaint was filed by the family at the time.

The Murder & Cover-up
The Act: According to the CBI, on the evening of April 24, 2012, Sheena was picked up in a car by Indrani Mukerjea, her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna, and their driver Shyamvar Rai.

Execution: Sheena was allegedly drugged and then strangled in the car in a Bandra by-lane.

Disposal: The group allegedly drove to a forest in Raigad the next morning, where they burnt her body and disposed of the remains in a suitcase.

Discovery and Arrests (2015)
The Break: The case came to light in August 2015 when driver Shyamvar Rai was arrested in an unrelated arms case and confessed to the murder.

Arrests: Indrani Mukerjea and Sanjeev Khanna were arrested shortly after. In November 2015, Indrani’s then-husband, media tycoon Peter Mukerjea, was also arrested for his alleged involvement in the conspiracy.

Revealed Identities: It was only after the arrests that the public (and allegedly Peter Mukerjea) learned Sheena was actually Indrani’s daughter, not her sister.

Motive & Key Players
Indrani Mukerjea: Prime accused and alleged mastermind.
Rahul Mukerjea: Peter’s son from a previous marriage and Sheena’s fiancé. His insistence on finding Sheena kept the suspicion alive for years.

Possible Motives: The CBI cited Indrani’s disapproval of Sheena’s relationship with Rahul and potential financial disputes involving offshore accounts and properties.

Current Status (March 2026)
Bail: All main accused, including Indrani and Peter Mukerjea, are currently out on bail.

Trial: The trial is ongoing in a special CBI court. As of early 2025, over 90 witnesses have been examined, with approximately 92 still remaining.

Recent Update: In July 2024, the CBI confirmed that Sheena's skeletal remains, which were briefly reported as untraceable, were located at their office in New Delhi.

The case has been featured in several documentaries, including the Netflix series The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth.
