Russia Chessboard Serial Killer

Alexander Pichushkin, known as the "Chessboard Killer" or the "Bitsa Park Maniac," is one of Russia’s most prolific serial killers. He was active between 1992 and 2006, primarily in Moscow's Bitsevsky Park.
Key Details of His Crimes
  • The Nickname: He was dubbed the "Chessboard Killer" because he aimed to kill 64 people, one for each square on a chessboard. Following his arrest, police found a chessboard in his apartment with squares marked or coins placed to track his victims.
  • Victim Profile: He primarily targeted elderly homeless men, alcoholics, or acquaintances. He would lure them into the park under the guise of sharing vodka to mourn his supposedly dead dog.
  • Modus Operandi: Most victims were killed by repeated blows to the head with a hammer or by being thrown into the park's sewage wells to drown. In his later crimes, he often "signed" his murders by pushing vodka bottles or sticks into the victims' open skull wounds.
  • Motivation: Pichushkin claimed that killing made him feel like "God" and that "life without murder is like life without food". He also reportedly sought to surpass the body count of Andrei Chikatilo, Russia's most notorious serial killer at the time.
Arrest and Conviction
  • Apprehension (June 2006): He was caught after his final victim, a female co-worker named Marina Moskalyeva, left a note for her son mentioning she was going for a walk with him.
  • Trial (2007): During his trial, he sat in a reinforced glass cage and openly boasted about his crimes, even asking the court to add 11 more victims to his official tally to bring it to 63.
  • Sentence: On October 29, 2007, he was convicted of 48 murders and three attempted murders and sentenced to life imprisonment. He is currently serving his sentence at the "Polar Owl" prison in the Russian Arctic.
Recent Developments (2025-2026)
As of April 2025, the Russian prison service announced that Pichushkin, now 50, has indicated he is ready to confess to 11 additional murders of men and women. If these confessions are verified and lead to convictions, his total confirmed victim count would rise to 59, solidifying his status as one of the most prolific killers in Russian history, second only to Mikhail Popkov.
