Shivank Avasthi Murder Case


On December 23, 2025, Shivank Avasthi, a 20-year-old Indian doctoral student, was fatally shot near the University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus (UTSC). 
Incident Details

Time and Location: The shooting occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. near the Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road area in Scarborough.

Discovery: Toronto Police responded to reports of a person with serious injuries and found Avasthi with a gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Homicide Investigation: The case has been classified as Toronto's 41st homicide of 2025.

Suspects: The suspect(s) fled the area before police arrived. As of December 26, 2025, no arrests have been made and no official suspect descriptions have been released.

Public Safety: While the UTSC campus was briefly locked down following the incident, authorities later clarified there was no ongoing threat to the general public.

Profile: Shivank Avasthi was a life sciences doctoral student at the University of Toronto and a cheerleader at the Scarborough campus.

Diplomatic Support: The Consulate General of India in Toronto expressed "deep anguish" over the tragedy and stated they are in contact with the family to provide assistance and coordinate with local authorities.

Community Concerns: This murder followed the killing of another Indian national, Himanshi Khurana, just days earlier on December 19, 2024, leading to increased safety concerns among Indian students in Canada. Police have stated the two incidents are not linked.
