Roman Novak Ana Novak murder case
Russian crypto entrepreneur Roman Novak and his wife Anna were kidnapped, tortured, and murdered in the United Arab Emirates in October 2025, in a case linked to a large-scale cryptocurrency scam.
Details of the Crime and Investigation
Disappearance: The couple vanished on October 2, 2025, after being lured to a rented villa in Hatta, near the Omani border, by individuals posing as potential investors for their crypto platform, Fintopio.
Motive and Torture: The motive appears to be financial extortion related to Roman Novak's crypto assets. Investigators believe the Novaks were held captive and tortured for access to their cryptocurrency wallets. When the perpetrators failed to obtain the funds, they killed the couple. Reports suggest they were forced to watch each other being tortured and stabbed to death.
Discovery of Bodies: The Novaks' dismembered bodies were later found buried in plastic bags in a desert area near Fujairah, reportedly doused with industrial-strength solvents in an attempt to destroy forensic evidence.
Suspects and Arrests: Seven Russian nationals are suspected of involvement in the crime. Six have been arrested in Russia. The main suspects identified include a former police officer, Konstantin Shakht, along with Yury Sharypov and Vladimir Dalekin. Sharypov and Dalekin have pleaded guilty, while Shakht denies the charges.
Children: The couple left behind two young children, who have been placed in the care of relatives in Russia.
Background
Roman Novak was a convicted fraudster who had served a prison sentence in Russia for a previous investment scam. After his release on parole in 2023, he moved to the UAE and launched the Fintopio crypto application, which reportedly raised around $500 million from investors before the company abruptly shut down around the time of his disappearance. It is suspected that disputes over these alleged scam proceeds triggered the plot to kidnap and murder the couple.
