Johannesburg Mass Shooting
On Sunday, December 21, 2025, at approximately 1:00 a.m. local time, a mass shooting occurred at a licensed tavern in the Bekkersdal township, located about 40 k.m. southwest of Johannesburg.
The Incident
Casualties: At least nine people were killed (seven men and two women) and 10 others injured.
Method of Attack: Approximately 12 unidentified suspects arrived in two vehicles—a white minibus (kombi) and a silver sedan. They entered the tavern and opened fire "unprovoked" before continuing to shoot randomly at people fleeing in the streets.
Weapons Used: Gunmen were armed with pistols and at least one AK-47 Assault Rifle.
Robbery: Following the shooting, the attackers reportedly searched the dead and injured to steal valuables, including cellphones.
Victims: Among the deceased was a driver for an online ride-hailing service who was passing the scene.
Investigation and Context
Manhunt: The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched a massive manhunt for the suspects. Gauteng's Serious and Violent Crime Investigations and Crime Intelligence units are leading the search.
Motive: The motive for the attack remains unclear as of December 23, 2025.
Wider Violence: This is the second mass shooting at a South African bar in December 2025. Earlier this month, on December 6, gunmen killed 12 people (including a three-year-old child) at a hostel bar west of Pretoria.
South Africa continues to grapple with high levels of gun violence, recording an average of 63 murders per day in 2025.
