Angel Chakma Mob Lynching Case

Angel Chakma was a 24-year-old MBA student from Agartala, Tripura, whose death in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, in late 2025 sparked national outrage and massive protests over alleged racial violence against people from Northeast India.
Incident and Death
  • The Attack: On December 9, 2025, Angel and his younger brother Michael were buying household items in the Selaqui area of Dehradun when they were confronted by a group of men.
  • The Confrontation: According to witnesses and the victim's family, the group allegedly targeted them with racial slurs, including "Chinki" and "Chinese". When Angel and his brother objected and asserted their Indian identity—famously saying "I am not Chinese... I am an Indian"—the group attacked them with iron rods and knives.
  • Death: After fighting for his life for 17 days at a hospital in Dehradun, Angel succumbed to fatal spinal and head injuries on December 25, 2025.
Legal Investigation
  • Police Stance: The Dehradun Police have denied a "racial" angle, instead claiming the incident was a clash between two groups fueled by alcohol and "misunderstanding". They noted that one of the accused is from the Northeast (Manipur), which they argue contradicts a racial motive.
  • Arrests: Five individuals have been arrested: Shaurya Rajput, Avinash Negi, Suraj Khawas, Ayush Badoni, and Sumit. The main suspect, Yash Awasthi, is currently absconding with a ₹25,000 reward for his capture.
  • Status: The case, originally filed as an attempt to murder, has been upgraded to a murder charge.
National Reaction
  • Protests: Widespread protests and candlelight marches have taken place in Agartala, Tripura, and other parts of India demanding justice.
  • Political Response: High-profile figures including Rahul Gandhi, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, and Nagaland Minister Temjen Imna Along have condemned the killing as a horrific hate crime, calling for stricter protections for Northeastern citizens.
  • Government Aid: The Uttarakhand government has provided ₹4.12 lakh in financial assistance to Angel’s family.
