Shivani Bhatnagar Murder Case
Shivani Bhatnagar Murder Case was one of the most sensational and mysterious murder cases of India. She was found murdered on 23 January 1999. She was employed with Indian Express. Her murder was one of the most mysterious and her death was most scandalous. Indian Police Service(IPS) officer Ravi Kant Sharma was chargesheeted by the investigating Delhi police official for the murder. Ravi Kant Sharma absconded after an arrest warrant was issued against him. Finally he surrendered on 27 September,2002 to the police.
Ravi Kant Sharma confessed to the crime and elaborated that he killed Shivani Bhatnagar because he had been having illicit extra marital relationship with her and that he feared that she may expose their relationship to the public as she had been threatening him to do so of late.
IPS officer Ravi Kant Sharma along with Sri Bhagwan Sharma, Satya Prakash and Pradeep Sharma were accused in the Shivani Bhatnagar murder case and they were convicted by a Delhi Trial Court on 18 March 2008. Two other accused—Dev Prakash Sharma and Ved Prakash alias Kalu—were acquitted for want of evidence. Those convicted were sentenced to life imprisonment on 24 March 2008. On 12 October 2011 Delhi High Court acquitted Ravi Kant Sharma, Sri Bhagwan Sharma and Satya Prakash saying lack of evidence on appeal. The conviction of Pradeep Sharma was upheld.
It was accused that Shivani Bhatnagar had acquired some sensitive and secret documents relating to the Saint Kitts Case through the Inspector General of Police -Haeyana Ravi Kant Sharma. Ravi Kant Sharma was demanding the documents back from her which she refused and hence the murder happened. However, there wasn't any strong evidence for the accustion.
