Raman Raghav - Serial Killer

Raman Raghav was the serial killer from India who was active during 1965 - 1968 in Bombay, now Mumbai. He had many aliases like 'Sindhi Dalwai', "Talwai', 'Anna' etc. He was given the alias Jack the Ripper of India by educated class. Common people called him 'Kanpatti Maar'(Earlobe Hitter).
He would kill slum dwellers or homeless people who would sleep in the night in the footpaths of the city or along the railway tracks. He too was homeless and also had mental sickness.
In his first round of killings during 1965-66 in Eastern Bombay(Mumbai) he was supposed to have murdered around 14 people. He was detained and interrogated but was let go for want of evidence against him. He sat silent for quite some years may be because of fear of the police but later on he moved to new areas and began his crimes once again.
In his second round of murders he was supposed to have killled around 19 people in the suburbs of Bombay (Mumbai).
He would use heavy blunt objects like hammer or stone to bludgeon the people sleeping on the footpaths.
He had become fear of the households. People had stopped sleeping outside. And even stopped stepping outside after the dark unnecessarily.
Bombay Crime Branch DCP Kulkarni spearheaded the investigation and after hard search arrested him. He had confessed to the murders in both his parees but it is believed he had actually murdered many more people than normally assumed. He was sentenced to death but later his death sentence was commuted to the life imprisonment because of his mental health. He died in prison at last in1995 due to kidney failure.
