Priyadarshini Mattoo Murder Case case
Priyadarshini Mattoo was 25 years old law student who stayed at her uncle's house in New Delhi. She was found raped and murdered at her residence on 23 January,1996. She was strangulated with an electric wire and her face was smashed hard by a helmet beyond recognition.
Santosh Kumar Singh who was the son of an influential IPS Officer was found to be the culprit who committed the crime. He had been stalking Priyadarshini Mattoo for past many years. He was her senior at her educational institution. His father was Inspector General of Pondicherry. As is usual in India person with influence go scot free with the crimes. Incidentally his father had acted as a Joint Commissioner of police of Delhi and took part in the investigation of the case. The trial court but obviously absolved him of the charges.
The verdict was challenged in the higher court which found many discripencies and liniencies in the investigation and handed over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Priyadarshini Mattoo had complained about the harassment and stalking ahe had been subjected to by the hands of Santosh Kumar Singh. She was provided with a personal security guard following her complaint. In retaliation Santosh Kumar Singh also filed a fake complaint against her that she was pursuing two degrees simaltaneously.
It was noted that a servant had witness Santhosh Kumar Singh knocking on her door. And he had said that he wanted to make compromise on the cases they had filed against each others.
Higher court sentenced him to death which was later commuted to the life imprisonment.
