Jessica Lal Murder Case

Jessica Lal was a model in New Delhi and worked as an exclusive celebrity barmaid. On the night  of 29 she was working in Tamarind Court Restaurant owned by socialite Bina Ramani in south Delhi’s Mehrauli April,1999 facing the Qutub Minar.
Around 12:30 a.m. Siddharth Vashisht, also known as Manu Sharma, the son of Venod Sharma, an affluent and influential Congress Party leader from Haryana entered the bar which didn't have proper license and permission for the party. He demanded to Jessica Lal wine to be served to him. Since the bar was closed for the day and also had run out of the stock she refused him. He again demanded the wine and had offered Rs. 1000 for it. He was accompanied by some of his frineds. Jessica Lal had refused once again which had him enraged therefore he took out his gun and fired at the ceiling. Jessica Lal put an adamant stance which had infuriated Manu Sharma who, according to the witnesses fired at her. Commotion and chaos followed. Jessica Lal was rushed to the hospital.
Manu Sharma and his friends took the advantage of the chaos and escaped from the crime scene. However he was subsequently convicted under pressure from public but the trial court discharged him perhaps citing the lack of witnesses and evidences. A public uproar forced the prosecution to take case again to the higher court. Higher court convicted him and sent him to the jail.
