Indira Gandhi Murder Case
Mrs. Indira Gandhi prime minister of India was killed by two of her official bodyguards, Satwant Singh and Beant Sing, at her official residence at Safdar Jung Road, New Delhi on 31 October,1984. The two bodyguards wanted to take revenge on her for her ordering the carrying out the Operation Blue Star at the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
Operation Blue Star was carried out to weed out Sant Jarnailsingh Bhindaranwale and his supporters who were carrying out militancy in support of creating an autonomous state of Khalistan within the territory of India. Many people including pilgrims had lost their lives in the process of Operation Blue Star.
At about 9:20 a.m. Indian Standard Time, on 31 October 1984, Mrs. Indira Gandhi was on her way to be interviewed by British actor Peter Ustinov, who was filming a documentary for Irish television. She was accompanied by Constable Narayan Singh, personal security officer Rameshwar Dayal and Mrs. Indira Gandhi's personal secretary, R. K. Dhawan. She was walking through the garden of the Prime Minister's Residence at No. 1 Safdarjung Road in New Delhi towards the neighboring 1 Akbar Road office.
Mrs. Indira Gandhi passed by a wicket gate guarded by Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, and then the two men opened fire at her. Beant Singh fired three rounds into her abdomen from his .38 (9.7 mm) revolver; then Satwant Singh fired 30 rounds from his Sterling sub-machine gun after she had fallen on to the ground. Both men then threw down their weapons and Beant Singh said, "I have done what I had to do. You do what you want to do." In the next six minutes, Border Police officers Tarsem Singh Jamwal and Ram Saran captured and killed Beant Singh, while Satwant Singh was arrested by Mrs. Indira Gandhi's other bodyguards and an accomplice who was trying to escape the scene; he was seriously wounded. Satwant Singh was hanged in 1989 with accomplice Kehar Singh. However questions and doubts were raised about why was Beant Singh killed when he had already surrendered.
Beant Singh was one of Mrs. Indira Gandhi's favorite guards, whom she had known for ten years. Because he was a Sikh, he had been taken off her staff after Operation Blue Star; however, Mrs. Indira Gandhi had made sure that he was reinstated. Satwant Singh was just 22 years old at the time of the assassination, and had been assigned to Mrs. Indira Gandhi's guard just five months ago.
